Did you know that dirty teeth are harder to move than clean teeth? Your orthodontist will stress the importance of oral hygiene during treatment, but that doesn’t mean you can go M.I.A from your dentist. Seeing your dentist ensures that plaque and tartar is removed that your toothbrush is not equipped to remove thoroughly. Here are a few reasons why it’s important to see your dentist.
1: Plaque and Tartar: Orthodontics appliances on your teeth create additional nooks and crannies where food can accumulate. Eventually, after the left over food has set there to long plaque and tartar will start to form. Only a dental professional is capable of removing it thoroughly.
2: Decalcification: This is what it’s called when teeth lose calcium. It will appear as white spots on your tooth, and once it’s there it’s irreversible. However, not to worry, it is preventable! All you have to do is limit eating sugary & acidic foods, brush and floss like instructed and visit your dentist every 6 months… it’s that easy!
3: Cavities: If you want to ensure you get your braces off on time, maintaining your regular dental checkups is important! Getting a cavity during orthodontic treatment can potentially set you back in your treatment time. Let’s say for instance that a cavity needs to be filled and your dentist requires the bracket or band on that tooth to be removed in order for them to properly treat the cavity. This will result in you having to make a trip to our office to remove it, go to your dentist have the cavity filled, and than return back to our office to have the bracket bonded back to your tooth.
Having your regular dental checkups are super important! We want to give you the best smile as possible, but also keep your dental health at it’s highest. With the help of your dentist we team up to achieve both!
